Why Jose Mourinho is the only man capable of replacing Sir Alex…

29 07 2009

“I would consider going to Manchester United. but United have to consider if they want me to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson. If they do, then of course.”

That’s what Jose Mourinho told The Mirror today. I know The Special One has hinted as much before, but with Alex Ferguson’s retirement getting nearer every day (he’s 67, making him the oldest manager in the Prem, La Liga, Serie A or Bundesliga) the time to pick a replacement may be approaching.

Man Utd fans seem divided as to whether Mourinho would be a good choice or not, with some citing Mourinho’s, shall we say, pragmatic approach to football, which doesn’t sit well with Utd fans love of attacking football.

But my feeling is that Mourinho is the only possible choice, as he’s the only man with the personality to step into such a daunting situation as replacing Ferguson. Any other manager runs the risk of being overwhelmed by SAF’s legacy, but TSO has enough confidence/arrogance to shrug off that big Scottish shadow and enjoy the challenge. Proof of this unshakable self-belief (if any more were needed) came in the same press conference when Mourinho was asked about his departure from Chelsea:

“Since I left I became champion again but they have not been champions again.

I keep winning and they don’t.”

I rest my case.
